progress pics

I forgot who asked, the lettering was suggested to be a WDW in an olive green color. I changed it to a blue-grey.

I often wonder what designers think when they work so hard on putting together a design with colors that 'work', and see where stitchers [like me] make changes ...

I enjoy stitching this one - with the bright & cheerful floss colors. So far, I've used: DMC 581, 580, 166, 3833, 3831, 501, 503. My initials [If I add them] will be in floss close to the linen color. If interested, I had an earlier post re the suggested fibers & substitutions. If you click on the gilded cage label, the older post should pop up.

Thx for all your kind comments & e-mails. I do enjoy pulled thread & it was one of the first needlework techniques I learned after joining EGA/NANI. I took an ICC [independent course] thru EGA & learned a lot of pulled stitches. I have several samples in a notebook. I think using crochet cotton is the answer to fibers breaking -- it is less expensive & a sturdier fiber. Plus, pulling with an even tension makes a difference. How you create the openings is up to you -- as long as the pulling is even, it looks great. More on pulled thread next week.

DH is taking a couple days off work & will be making some changes on our computer. I'll answer your questions & look forward to visiting your blogs early next week!

I've asked a couple of designers, including Kathy Barrick-Dieter, this same question (about changing colors) and she thinks it's exciting to see what stitchers come up with for a new interpretation. ;)

Both are very beautiful.
There is little more that a bird is completed.

Hey Lelia, I've just noticed how long I've been away when I saw I 'missed'62 of your updates! Now, either you sneakily update your blog five times a day, or I've been lurking for too long.
Anyway, I love the bird in the cage project! Great use of colours, too!

They look great!! I'd imagine that most designers love to see how people interpret and inject their own tastes in their pieces. I think I would! :)

I agree with what Barbara said. I've send some photos to Sandie Vanosdall of The Sweetheart Tree of my versions of her projects (which are always TOTALLY different in color) and showed her one in person last year at CATS. She was so excited about the colors, she actually wrote down what I used. I can imagine that some designers with an ego would be affronted, but the flexible, truly creative souls will be happy to see what others come up with. After all, if this was a copy/paste hobby, then why not just make stitching machines to crank out exact copies? :) I really love your colors in the gilded cage!

Your projects look lovely.

I've asked a couple of designers what they've thought/felt when someone has tweaked their design, often I find they're flattered!

So keep tweaking those patterns!

Wow Lelia, this piece is certainly a cheery one with all the changes you've made. I bet the designer would be delighted to see how her creativity has sparked even more creativity in another person.
I love your photo's which show your stitching environment as well as your stitching. All your finished pieces close by to enjoy and inspire. Cheers

As a designer, I'll tell you what I think: It certainly can be a lot of work to pick just the right colors, but that's the fun part! I think it's wonderful to see the variety of colors stitchers use, and I thoroughly enjoy it when stitchers show me what they've done with my designs...imagination and creativity are beautiful things!
