Ann Relf 1815

Ann Relf 1815
The Collection of the Wisconsin Historical Society

In the With My Needle and Pen Newsletter, I was delighted to read about the Wisconsin Historical Society putting their sampler collection on-line.

When I visited an exhibit in Chicago (2007), I was interested in the Ann Relf sampler -- esp the first section with the alphabet letters surrounded by queen stitches!!! The image in the Exhibition Cataloge was ok, the on-line photo is larger & easier to view the stitching : )

This collection includes Betsy Manchester, Rhode Island, 1793

  3. Hi Lelia,

It's amazing that, considering how fragile they are and what some of them must have been through during the many long decades that they've existed, not to mention questionable care, so many hand stitched samplers and other types of needlework have survived into the present.

We're lucky to be able to enjoy them in exhibits such as this one. They provide us with inspiration and are a link to those who loved to stitch a hundred or more years ago. Wonder what those stitchers would think of the designs, threads and fabrics that we sort of take for granted today.

    Cheers Judy

  4. What a pretty sampler! Thanks for the heads up about the Blackbird Group doing a SAL of the Loose Feathers, Leila. I'm just too pressured right now with my SALs and RRs to do one more!! LOL But, we'll probably be stitching along in spirit just the same. :) Deb

  6. Fun pictures of the different samplers and other art you've been showing. It's been ages since I've been to an art museum. When the weather gets nicer I may need to make a field trip.
