Defy Gravity

Mel, Carol, Sue {+ I took the picture}   at the Chicago Cultural Center where we enjoyed the spectacular
Healy + Millet stained glass dome ....

walked to the other side of the building to view the
tiffany mosaics, lamps and
Tiffany glass dome.

Found a charming woman to take our picture:
in the Preston Bradley Hall (surrounded by Tiffany).

Walked a couple blocks to see
Wicked!!!!    Such an inspiring performance.   The costumes, the sets, the music, the story.   Delighted to be with friends and enjoy this production together.

I bought a pin
in support of the Stand Up to Bullying
awareness.    Link HERE.

Stopped at Garrett Popcorn [next door to theatre] for treats, walked over to Macy's to see a couple of the holiday window displays.    Couldn't resist taking multiple escalators to the seventh floor to see:
Believe

the tree in the Walnut Room.

Time seemed to pass quickly and we found ourselves on the return train homeward.     While sunny and brisk, the weather cooperated and we had a great time.

Art O Mat

Helen Harris Paintings
Pine Shore Studio Blog
Facebook Page

During a recent visit to Chicago, DH & I had a cup of coffee in the Chicago Cultural Center
While DH was taking a call, I wandered over to the Art O Mat machine
These are cigarette machines stocked with ART!!!

I bought a couple tokens in the gift shop & selected a floral (first photo); My husband ended his call & selected a painting (photo below)

I hope some day, when I approach the machine, I'll find some of my textile artist friends have participated!! What fun it would be to select a piece of art from one of my friends : )

These are my Art O Mat purchases (so far)

Free exhibit in Chicago

Petronele Gerlikiene: Embroidered Myths and Everyday Stories
January 12 through April 6, 2008
Chicago Cultural Center, Michigan Avenue Galleries
78 E. Washington Street
Free

One of the most acclaimed, self-taught Lithuanian-American artists, Petronele Gerlikiene was born in Chicago in 1905 and died in Vilnius, Lithuania in 1979. She spent most of her life working in the countryside but, after retiring in 1972, she moved to the capital to live with her artist son. Fond of needlework and embroidery, she started to create her own compositions on curtains and rugs, with different trees as the central motifs, often surrounded by people and animals, sometimes referring to Lithuanian myths or simple daily life experiences. Organized by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs in cooperation with the Lithuanian Art Gallery Ciurlionis, Inc. and the Lithuanian Consulate in Chicago. Programs. Brochure.

Stitched Together--Early American Samplers

Stitched Together—Early American Samplers. Fifty-four samplers are on view at the Chicago Cultural Center at 78 E. Washington Street, with a companion exhibition of 14 samplers at the city’s oldest house, the Clarke House Museum, 1827 S. Indiana Avenue. More information HERE.

I hopped the South Shore & was delighted by the samplers on exhibit at the Cultural Center. It was pouring rain & I didn't see the Part II of this exhibit at a nearby museum/home in Chicago. I was impressed by these delicate textiles!! Esp that the x's didn't all cross in the same direction. And the QUEEN STITCHES -- loads and loads of queen stitches were fantastic. I am so used to seeing the samplers reproduced & was thrilled to see the original REAL DEAL.

As I was leaving, I stopped in the gift shop. At the counter was one sampler pattern -- this sampler was on display [on exhibit].

It is the Laura Ann Ludington 1828 Sampler. Pattern by Scholehouse for the Needle. This sampler really caught my eye! I was delighted to see that the pattern was available. When I was on the commuter train heading home, I enjoyed reading the insert re. L.Ludington & her family PLUS appreciate the fine paper quality, excellent stitch diagrams & notes. What a nice pattern. Just need some supplies & some free time : )

Porter County Fair: I'll be a building supervisor on Sunday from 2-4. If you are in the neighborhood, I'll be in the Expo East building -- the Home Econ displays.

I finished a couple more fair entries -- am still working on my beaded necklace. The cord I had made was to thick & the beads too tight as I worked the peyote in the round. After Nick & I made made up a new cord [out of perle cotton] the beading went well. I've got about 5" completed. This necklace should be around 35-36"

Thank you for leaving comments & suggestions on my blog + my e-mail box. I've been really busy & have not spent much time on-line.
