Bent Creek WIP & Alex's Crabbies

Managed a few stitches:
Autumn Row
c.2000 Bent Creek
- - - - - - - - - -
Our son, Alexander, has a few hermit crabs. He took these pictures.
Now that the season has changed, the humidity was becoming an issue for his pets. Even with a heater under the habitat, the humidity wasn't high enough. Alex tried to put rocks, sand, distilled water in the habitat. The problem was that all the sand was damp all the time. Spent some time re-thinking the habitat & changed from this:
To This:I found an old tray & put brand new, special sand inside. That way, the rocks and water stay clean -- the sand stays dry -- and the humidity so far is constant. Should be easier to clean, too. Just need to take out the sand tray, wash the gravel & put in fresh distilled water. I think there are five in the habitat -- at night, they like to go under the piece of wood (tunnel).

Pin Cube WIP, Alexander's crabbies

Q&A's - I realize I tend to put photos on my blog without much wording. So, here are a couple photos to answer questions. I finished the stitching for 2 sides. The other four sides will have applique pins inserted.I doubt I'll get to the finishing until this week-end. As always, you can click on the photos for enlarged view.

Q&A's: This is a photograph from Just Cross Stitch Magazine, December 2004. This is what the pin cubes look like. Pins inserted on 4 sides & stitched designs on 2 sides. I don't know if these kits are still available. It is one of the items from my Basket of NAY*. The finishing instructions say to lace the linen around cardboard squares & whip them together. They are not stuffed. Perhaps other stitchers have already made them??

Alex has two pet hermit crabs. (another longish story) Yesterday, Alex & I went to the pet store (where Alex works) and bought new habitat gizmos for his crabbies. We have a new tank, new lid, humidity thermometer, temperature thermometer, overhead lighting, day & night bulbs, new sand, new climbing material (not yet in the tank).

We almost forgot to buy the 'lid' - could you imagine the cats in the habitat? Perhaps they'd think it was a litter box?

Aren't they exciting creatures?? NOT!!Thank goodness he didn't want those little snakes that they sell (at the pet store -- yikes). They are in similar habitats and just give me the creeps.

Stitching by Alexander

Wee Wooly
Cecilia Turner, c.1995 Heart in Hand Needleart

Alexander [youngest son] stitched this a couple years ago. He used DMC cotton floss on aida cloth. He selected a Mill Hill crystal heart & braided the lamb's collar. We made cording. Together, we started to complete the finishing -- and, it got 'lost' in Alex's room. Last night, I added the cord + lamb button.

I've got the FINISHING blues ....

Wee Wooly by Heart In Hand

Alex bought the pattern & supplies a couple years ago -- stitched this las year & we worked on the cording together -- then, it got 'lost' in his room. If you saw his room ... you would see how easy things vanish !!!

I found it in a bag & worked on the finishing during the week. Alex came into my room & said he wanted the cording around the pillow; however, wanted a tassel in one corner.

I'm thinking to sew the cord in place & have the cords come together in one corner. Wrap the cording together & then get the tassel sewn in. The lamb button can be sewn over any 'boo boo's' I make along the way ....

And of course, I need more floss for the tassel.

UPDATE re. my name

re my name ... My middle name Lee is my maternal Grandmother's Monogram (LEE - Lelia Evelyn E------). My Grandmother passed away 3 weeks after my birth. At that time, my older brother started calling me Lelia or Little Lee. I didn't use my first name until much later in life (when I was no longer "Little"). When I wanted to start a stitching web log -- I noticed there was a Carol (Garden of Stitches) and a Lee (Lake Stitcher). Thus, I chose my more formal name. I'm comfortable with all my names & when in doubt "GF" works : )

c.1991 The Scarlet Letter N. Hinde 1778 - A Miniature Sampler. What a joy ; ) I used AVAS 945 Red Silk on 32 ct Antique Ivory Linen. 2.75" W x 1.75" H (apx) The rabbit motif was from Brenda Keyes Alphabets Motifs & Borders c.1999, published by The Sampler Company.

I think I'd like to try another miniature soon. I like the Mini Flower Basket from EGA. (www.egausa.org under merchandise). Another one in my stash is "Better Late Than Never" Sampler (Circa 1820-1830) c.2001 by Eileen J. Bennett for The Sampler House. Plus, who can resist the wonderful selections at The Scarlet Letter and Threads Thru Time -- so many miniature sampler patterns to choose from! Working over one thread is a challenge & I take a lot of breaks! I try to stitch for about an hour & then put it aside for another day.

I luv U Alex + Yoplait Whips!

Introducing ..... Alexander!
What an interesting morning ; ) Our son, Alex, is 13 years old -- enjoys Drama Club at school. This year, they are performing CATS in January. He has been learning tap dancing and other dance routines all Summer. Today, he received his make-up lesson. Sharing photographs .... he is a cutie kitty. I luv him. I told him he looked purr-fect & he rolled his eyes.

Alex has been stitching thru the Summer & has several finishes. He has three Mill Hill kits for me to finish (2-pins & 1-orn) -- the DMC mentor kit -- Plus, Have You Any Wool (Heart in Hand). He wants a grey cord DMC 413 with Mill Hill Sheep Button in one corner. Looks like I have some finishing in the future!

Snack-of-the-Week: Yoplait Whips! The lemon and lime are my favorites -- the kids like cherry. Got several on sale at the market. I still haven't approached my bathroom scale .... figure those numbers can wait another day ; )

Started reading Miss Read: Thrush Green ..... here is a quote: "Look at the day ahead and never backward" The characters are waiting for the fair to open ....
