CQ + Prairie Schooler projects

This is the next step in Kathy Shaw's class.
Class information HERE.

These are my ribbon violets -- After trial-n-error, they seem to be okay.

In addition to the ribbon embroidery,  GF Cathy B, blogging at With Needle and Thread,
helped me out with a complimentary pattern from Prairie Schooler.
A friend made a pincushion for me, years back, and I've used it so often, it is getting beat up!
I started a new one, on aida cloth.
It is a nice pattern and will grow up to be my new pincushion.

The rabbit needlebook, in above photo, is on the same color aida cloth.
Pattern from Prairie Schooler, In The Woods.

The Prairie Schooler, c.1994, Book No. 46.

Ribbons!

The next part of my CQ block
is making ribbon flowers.

A challenge.

I've done very little with ribbons.

I have purchased some & owned some from Pat Winter, now hanging up to get the wrinkles out!

Next week, I'll get a section done.

The Verse is a Rebus, Part II

Thx Pat!!!

I was given
these photos from
Pat Winter
of the tea trays
she purchased

It is so much fun
for me to see
close up images
these pieces

I thought I'd share ...

Polly, put the kettle on
and we'll all have tea

(who is Polly?)

Except the kettle boiling be,
filling the pot spoils the tea

And, I wasn't able to figure out
what that meant -- so, consulted
with a couple tea drinkers & stitching friends,
in the know ... they tell me
you can only brew a good pot of
tea with BOILING water
not warm, not hot --- has to be boiling

Another picture:

Has anybody else
seen or stitched
a sampler like these?

Part One - previous post

The verse is a rebus ....

A couple of days ago,
I noticed a photograph
taken by
Pat Winter
on her post
Paulownia tree in bloom

If you look at her post
and scroll down to the items
she purchased,
you'll see a couple of trays
with tea themes ....

What a blast from the past

In July of 2001, I purchased a
pattern, from a stitching friend, called
The Tea Sampler
c.1996 Threads Through Time

This morning, I unearthed it
in my stash:

On the pattern, it says "This little tea sampler was found at a flea market
and is now in a private collection.
The original is a tiny piece measuring 4 1/2" wide by 4" tall.
Unframed, the linen was sewn to a fabric backing.
The verse is a rebus in which a picture represents a word."

This is the photo which came with the pattern:

This is a close-up of the one I stitched:
I used wildflowers by Caron (Fiesta) and
Danish Designs flower thread

Of course, I took it to some stitchy friends
& we decided the verse was:

Except the kettle boiling be,
Filling the pot
spoils the tea

The photo on Pat's blog reads:
Put the kettle on
And we'll all have tea

my guess is the tray underneath
has nearly the same verse
as the one in the pattern I have

Has anybody else seen sampler verse in
a rebus? I find them so interesting

thx

Aren't these the cat's meow?

I was gifted by Pat
blogging at Pat Winter Gatherings ...

She sent two stitching accessories
A needle keeper
(a very pretty leaf
with super strong magnet)
to keep my needle from
falling away!

See the needle in the center of the leaf?

AND, a needle threader
with a smashing kewl
bead on the wire!

The bead is perfect
to hold & the wire
easily goes thru
the needle eye

Did you notice the awesome card they came with (on)?

OH my, Pat sure knows how to spoil me rotten : )

I cannot help wonder if she
is planning to gift her students
when they come for lessons
or add these to her
etsy shop

Lessons? as in classes? Yes,
check out her blog

Porter Co Fair: Best of Show

Thx everybody for your comments re. my ribbons at Porter Co Fair --- If you want to see the BIG WINNER, please visit Surprises & Fun at the Fair post by Pat Winter on her Gatherings blog. And, while you are visiting her blog, check out her awesome textiles, (incl hand-dye ribbons ... like a piece of heaven on hearth) demonstrations, Art Fire (incl Bliss Kits) and her re-do of some digs for CLASSES : ) IMO - Pat is one of the most generous & kind persons on the planet -- very willing to share the basics, the how-to's in a step-by-step way She is enthusiastic, knows her stuff, and doesn't hover! She lets the creativity take over & enjoys the unfolding of creative processes After she showed me (actually us -- Karol & I) the ropes, it removed the mystery of CQ & with a few hands on demos, I was able to create some lovely ribbon roses, fancy surface stitches, and yes - even put together a start on a small project with bits of this-n-thats Pat shared from her studio stash: (this trim was white until we used ink pads to add a rainbow of color!) and a little help from her friend & local artist Ellen Anne Eddy who created labels for needlebook pages Bottom Line --- Run right over to see the list of classes from THIS POST Hope to see you there!!!

Live with a song ...

... in your heart. I think I have embellished enough. What do you think?
Next, I'll roll the edges, stitch -- add the lavender & close. Last -- There is a flower & leaf to add near the top -- and, hands & feet to add ...
We were happy that GF, Mel, visited the bead shop (during the doll class) over her lunch hour. So, Melody, what do you think? Improved since the last time you saw it? Did you see Karol's doll? She finished over the week-end.
Thx in advance to GF, Debbie L, who phoned. She was organizing her stash and came accross a couple doll & toy making books. Wanted to know if I could use them. Who me? Of course!!! I appreciate you thinking of me!

Inner Child Doll Class

Here is the progress on my doll from yesterday's class. (Details about the class in yesterday's blog post ).
Alert -- this may be the longest post I've ever made on this blog!
I was really at ease during this class. I enjoyed being with the group and didn't feel any pressure to rush. Our instructor was friendly, didn't hover, gave us clear step-by-step directions. She gave us loads of time & brought excellent examples to inspire us to create our own dolls.
Such a treat to have in-hand dolls, pins, and Pat's beautiful book -- stunning textile projects and loaded with embellishments
When Karol & I sat down at the table, we had a tray -- bag w/class supplies -- and a gift!
When we opened our kits & gift, we found cheerful & colorful doll supplies AND candy to celebrate our "play time". Pat selected top notch supplies & got us started on the faces. They were ironed on -- and then encircled with beads. We cut out the words & ironed them on, too. I embellished with metallic fiber lazy daisy stitches & beads.
This doll will be stuffed with lavender buds. Pat demonstrated clipping the fabric, rolling it, and securing with a buttonhole stitch edge. We used perle cotton for that -- and I did ok ... for a first attempt. (first photo in this post)
This is my corner desk at home. I was tempted to clear it off (again) and give me more room for the doll body embellishing - I think I just might set up the ironing board next to my corner & shift stuff around. With this kind of doll, I think the more stuff at your fingertips, the better!
I took my buttonhole edge out this a.m. and plan to embellish the doll body some more with charms, beads, etc. Then, will roll & stitch it closed with the buttonhole edge -- maybe smaller and tighter! I forgot we were supposed to make a few stitches & pull them tight every 3 or 4 ...
I am going to move the heart charm, too. It needs to be on the other side of the doll
This is a close-up photo showing some of the supplies
Everything out & ready to sew on.
This is a photo of an Inner Child Doll. It came w/kit - and was our needle holder.
I felt so special because of all the small details. Pat has a gift for 'presentation' & with all the embellishments at hand -- they are screaming to be added to the doll. Not put back into a plastic ziplock & stored in a cupboard
Did I mention the class was held at a beading store? What a special woman to have us in as guests. She had two tables set up for us & bottled water available. Even offered discount for beads in the store that day. In addition, Myra - owner of LaBeadaLoca gave each student a pkg w/beautiful ribbon. She had a bowl of misc beads on the table & encouraged us to use anything. I pulled out smoky color beads - a tad larger than the seed beads I brought from home. Myra called the bowl "class supplies". I liked them so much Myra said I could have the rest of the container for a $1.00 Is that kewl or what?
There are photographs on Pat's blog of the entire class in progress. Dolls created by the other students.
I'm looking forward to finishing this doll & figuring how to make my own face & lettering transfers. The possibilities are endless!!!

Silkie & Ribbons!!!

Pat sent me beautiful ribbons and a holiday Silkie!
She is so innovative and creative. She sells some of her projects on her Etsy Shop and her Zazzle Site
I bought this from her etsy shop for a gift exchange -- and just couldn't part wit it!!! I'm happy that I kept it. Isn't is kewl?
Karol and I are looking forward to lessons from Pat. We are interested in learning more about using silkies, ribbons, and creating interesting textile arts.

crazy quilting

I had mentioned the crazy quilt kit I got from the Quilt Show:in this post , and am just getting around to taking some pictures of the fabulous ribbons & kit, including the silkie or ciggie image on cloth. I picked the bride & groom as DH+I celebrated our 25th anniversary Oct 1st. I thought the ribbons so beautiful, I've pinned them to the wall!! Don't forget to swing by Pat Winter's blog, blog link here, for beautiful photographs & a showcase of her artistic talent. I bought her book, link here, and have enjoyed every page. I've gone thru it several times. Not sure I'll ever be as good at this as she is, but then again, there is always her Etsy store for finished projects, and more supplies.

I browsed my closet & did unearth a couple books on ribbon embroidery, crazy quilting stitches, and seam decorating. In addition to that, I pulled out a past Indiana State Day project where blocks were passed out & stitchers encouraged to embellish. I didn't get very far!! Now that I have some inspiration & a sack of lace from GF Sue, I think I'll have to give this a try.
